What is so special about Morgans, anyway?

I take it that Morgans are very popular coins. Often at street fairs I see people who seem to deal exclusively in Morgans. It seems to me that the majority of threads dealing with coins are focused on Morgans.

I like the Peace Dollar myself, and I don't mean to offend anyone by asking this so bluntly, but can someone please explain to me what the obsession with Morgans is?

Thanks!

I'm with you. I prefer the Peace dollar over Morgans. But the Morgan is older, has that historical feel, and gets a better price at sale than the Peace. JMO.

I think you hit a loarge part of it - the Morgan is older - and was used a lot longer and back in the old West as well.........there is a romance to it the Peace dollar does not have.........

And, for the record, while I focus on nicely toned Morgans, I also have Peace dollars........

I've owned both but I only get romantic about the Peace Dollars.
The open lips and flowing hair on Lady Liberty;
the dedication to Peace...
aaaahhh...beautiful

Unfortunately, I lost them all in a boating accident on Lake Erie.
In retrospect, I realize I should not have used my silver as an anchor.

I guess I'm excited by more subtle things than a girl waving her breasts in my face.
But that's just me. :bull-buddy-icon:

I never really got into Marilyn Monroe... a nice girl but too much a Hollywood fabrication.
And did you know she had six toes per foot? How do you explain that at the beach?
I know...nobody's looking at her toes....:D

Is that true???

I was always into the girl more than the body........when she died, I was a kid, and in Italy.....I had no idea who she was, but she was on every cover of every magazine.........and while I didn't know exactly what was going on - I thought she never looked really happy in any pictures - the smile looked forced somehow.

So - in later years, I enjoyed reading about who she was - and liked her films but not a huge Marilyn film fan. I think my favorite might actually be a smaller one.......River of No Return......

And I never read about the 6 toes..........

But we've seriously hijacked this thread..........

I wonder how many toes Lady Morgan had? Hmmmmmmmmm.........

The Morgan Dollar represents a time in the History of this country where true Constitutional Freedom's existed.

Where the alure of adventure was around every corner.

My favorite Morgans are the ones minted in Carson City, Nevada.

All of the silver came from the Comstock Mine.

Then those from the very impressive San Francisco Old Mint.

If you've never toured the S.F Mint, I encourage you to check it out the next time you visit California.

And if you have any circulated CC or SF Morgans, they could have been handled by famous western folks like Wyatt Earp, Black Bart, they probably were spent in Cities like San Francisco, Reno, Las Vegas, Tombstone, Dead Wood, etc.

You are holding true History in your hands.

The Peace Dollar, while not as aesthetic, represents the Volstead Act., The I.R.S., The Leviathan growth of the Fedral Reserve, The Great Depression, the Prelude to War, etc.

It's a negative coin!

Besides, my first Coins were Morgans (and they were still in circulation).

From a Numismatic side, there is no such thing as perfect Peace Dollar specimen.

Don't forget, the Mints had troubles just trying to achieve a Mediocre Coin.

If I remember correctly, only New Orleans (O) had any consitancy.

Where as the Morgans have plenty of beautiful Examples.

Maranatha,

Re: What is so special about Morgans, anyway?

Maybe its because I just finished doing some reading and watching a documentary that deals with the inter-connectedness of all living things. And a "social consciousness" and all that. BUT I was literally in the process of writing a new thread a few minutes ago asking the exact same question as the OP about Morgans and more specifically why people prefer Morgans over Peace Dollars, or vice versa. A coincidence that I am probably alone in finding amusing.

At any rate I nearly ordered a handful of Peace Dollars off APMEX today but decided against it. Wanted to do more research. Plus I think if I were to begin a foray into numismatics (up till now I have been buying strictly bullion), I would probably only buy them from dealers in person where I can handle the coin personally.

I really like the Peace coin's design, but I now have a new appreciation for Morgans thanks to this thread. Definitely some food for thought!

OH and can somebody please place an order for a few million ounces of gold so we can get over this $1000 hump already! I've been goin crazy today watching the spot! SHEESH!

Well looks like the only thing I can do now is just buy both! Somehow I'll manage:wink:

I like the Morgans.

Its the reverse side that does it for me and the history.

I don't like the front!!

Historic note

Peace dollars were actually struck(1921) to commemorate the end of WW1...Germany did not sign the "Peace Treaty" until August of 1921.(the terms were so economically horrible, it planted the seeds for Hitler's rise and WW2)...

I ALWAYS carry silver coins in my pocket. My 2 favorite are my 2 well worn Morgans, an 1878, and a 1900, that I have in my pockets all the time, and some others that I add depending on my mood. Today I carried my 2 Morgans, A 1923 Peace dollar, a 1776-1976 IKE, and 3 half dollars--a walking liberty, a Franklin, and a Kennedy. I like the feel of good old American silver coins, big coins, real money, in my pocket. I like the jingle. But I love the old Morgans for the history as was put so eloquently above.

BTW, as far as investing, unless you have some very rare Peace dollars, the Morgans have consistently KILLED the Peace dollar in regard to numismatic investment. I do like the Peace dollar, aesthetically speaking, but it doesn't have the romance in it.

A little OT, but recently my wife was looking at my '22 Peace dollar I carry, and said she wished I had a '23. It was her dad's birth year, and she's really missed him after he passed. I dug one out, sealed it in an air-tite, and she keeps it in her purse. To me it's a chunk of silver, to her it's a link to her dad.

Seeem like this the morgan thread But I got to show love for the peace dollar.

I agree that the morgans have a have history that NO ONE CAN TOUCH.(comstock load, carson city etc)

Beside the sheer beauty of the peace dollar(I have yet to a coin with flowing hair so' real') the reason why I will be forever partial to them:

IT IS THE ONLY TIME IN THE HISTORY OF US MONEY THAT THE WORD "PEACE" WAS USED ON COINAGE.

I am hopeful that maybe in the far future we can do that again.

I'm in Europe. Good idea to collect Morgans or SAE's? Or better idea to collect European coins for WTSHTF for barter? Have been doing both.

Re: What is so special about Morgans, anyway?

The Morgan has rim denticles, the Peace does not. While this may seem like a minor detail, the absence of denticles can make a coin quite a bit less attractive, depending on personal taste. The Morgan has more of a flat, filled out obverse, whereas the Peace has fields that are more open, and a device (effigy) that "pops" off the coin more because of the higher relief. I personally much prefer the Morgan, but I can see how the Peace might appeal to others with different taste.
